I got a really good question today and this is something that's been asked multiple times and I want to take the time here to answer it.
A coach from Cincinnati who is a Football trainer messaged me and said:
"Hey Ben,
How do you stay so focused during the day to get things done. I feel like i start something and then I get quickly distracted. I feel like I don't have a lot of discipline and self-control throughout my day.
What can I do?"
When I consult with coaches and trainers on their time management I feel that most of them aren't decisive enough with how they spend their time during the day.
I want to share with you three things I feel that have really helped me and I know that if someone else does them it's really going to help them.
#1 - You need to have a clear separation between your cell phone and your business:
There's a couple of things I want you to download that I feel will really help you. the first one is google voice. All you have to do is go to google and type in "GOOGLE VOICE" and there you will be given a free phone number which you can use to call and text all your clients.
This way during the day no one can just shoot you a text message and distract you.
#2 - Have your phone on SILENT
My rule during the workday is I only take scheduled calls unless it's a family member period.
You might think this sounds a little ridiculous but when my "buddies" reach out to me I will NOT pick up my phone during my work day because unless it's scheduled I won't pick up my phone because I know it will distract me from the task in hand.
At this point in my career I have enough self-control to keep my phone on silent and never pick up unless it's a family member.
I have seen so many times situations where a coaches "phone" becomes a liability in the business people most coaches don't have the self-discipline to ONLY use it for work purposes and to drive the needle in the business forwards.
#3 - ONLY use social media and apps from your desktop/laptop
A massive change I made with how I go about my workday was I deleted all the apps from my phone and ONLY used my computer when I wanted to do anything work related.
I see this many times with coaches how they will have loads of apps downloaded onto their phone and during the workday they will be bombarded by notifications. Most of the time these notifications have nothing to do with the business and just leads to distractions and wasted time.
What I do now is I only use my laptop or desktop for anything work related. I try to spend as little time as possible on my phone and do all my work from my computer this way I am not distracted all the time by my phone.
I want to encourage you to find a system that works for you so you can become way more productive with your time.
I hope this helps,
-Ben
